A dish that every tourist in Beijing has to try is the Peking Roast Duck 北京烤鸭. And the famous restaurant synonymous with 北京烤鸭 is 全聚德, which sells 2 million roast ducks annually.

We visited the 全聚德 食王府 Quanjude King Palace Restaurant which is located at the Wangfujing 王府井Vehicle-Free Shopping Street . The restaurant is contained within the ex-residence of the 10th Prince of the Ming Dynasty and spans over 5 stories of dining halls, 1 great feast hall and 10 private VIP rooms.

We ordered the 全聚德极品烤鸭 Quanjude Superior Roast Duck (238 RMB per whole duck). Though widely touted to be the best in Beijing and enjoying a long history, the Quanjude Superior Roast Duck fell short of our expectations. The skin wasn’t crispy enough and the duck was too fatty and oily. It was also bland and sorely lacking in taste. This just wasn’t screaming to be Beijing’s most famous duck dish.

We requested the chefs to quick fry the remaining meat, fats and bones in salt and pepper (additional 38 RMB). There wasn’t much meat left but a larger proportion of bones instead. However, the simple quick fry in salt and pepper did wonders in elevating the taste of the duck meat.

Not commonly found in Singapore but a favourite with the locals is the 炒鸭心肠 Sauteed Duck Intestine and Heart (56 RMB). The duck intestine had a texture similar to pig intestines – a smooth, bouncy and chewy texture. The duck heart, on the other hand, was somewhat similar to pig liver – with a meaty-like, grainy texture. But once again, this dish was lacking taste, with inadequate seasoning.

The most pleasing dish of the night turned out to be something which didn’t contain duck – 烧汁杏鲍菇 Marinated King Oyster Mushroom with BBQ Sauce (40RMB). The mushrooms had thoroughly absorbed the savouriness of the BBQ sauce. This dish was served cold, but the mushrooms remained very tender, refreshing and addictive. It was not too heavy on the palate compared to the duck dishes and hence we could just keep eating it without feeling the burden.
