51 Fiveone Degrees

We are seeing a stir in the Patisserie scene in Singapore lately – not only have foreign bakeries flocked to our shores, new local brands have also started sprouting out in the heartlands. One such example is 51 Fiveone Degrees.

Chocolate Cream Cheese and Salted Caramel Cupcakes

The Chocolate Tart consisted of a vanilla base tart filled with dark chocolate. The tart base was slightly buttery, not too evident of vanilla. It was way too hard – a very big contrast to the thick and viscous dark chocolate centre. The dark chocolate was bittersweet and very rich. It was not of a fudgy texture, but more towards being semi-solid and finger licking. A decent rendition of the chocolate tart.

Cupcakes wise, the interesting feature of 51 Fiveone Degrees‘ cupcakes lie in the runny molten centre. The Salted Caramel cupcake was a classic Madagascar vanilla bean cupcake filled with fleur de sel caramel core and topped with buttercream. The vanilla flavour and fragrance of the cupcake didn’t stand out. We were more impressed with the salted caramel core. The salted caramel core was towards the sweeter side. Sadly, the semi-molten caramel core was rather small, and not sufficient to satisfy the caramel lovers in us.

On the other hand, we preferred the Chocolate Cream Cheese cupcake. It was a rich chocolate cupcake with a chocolate fudge core and topped with vanilla cream cheese frosting. The Chocolate Cream Cheese cupcake had stronger flavours. The cream cheese was more tasty and less greasy than the buttercream topping. The inner core was similar to the filling in the Chocolate Tart – a thick viscous and finger licking semi-molten chocolate centre.
