Made in Singapore? French inspired? Spanning across 4 shop units at Marina Bay Sands? Put that all together and you get Au Chocolat, newly opened in the last one month.

Au Chocolat

Au Chocolat was essentially divided into 2 sections – a retail section selling pralines, sweets, chocolate bars, accessories, souvenirs and of course, a whole range of cakes ranging from cheesecakes to chocolate cakes, brownies and cupcakes. The other section was the bistro dining area and the menu offerings included crepes, desserts, sandwiches, finger food and beverages. Something to take note of is that an additional charge of $2 per slice of cake was applicable if you wanted to have the cakes at the bistro area. Absurd it sounds, and a huge turn off. We ended up purchasing take aways as there was simply little logic in paying the extra $2 per cake.

Praline ($9) reminded us of the Caraibe from Canele, with a similar chocolate outer casing. The inside, however, was totally different. In this case, the inner fillings were very soft, somewhat creamy and mousse like. Not exactly what we had expected. First bite and we felt that the chocolate wasn’t of premium quality, but subsequent bites made us enjoy the dessert a bit more. There was also a faint nutty fragrance to it. Praline was pretty reasonable, not mind-blowing though.

The Caramel Crunch Brownie ($6) was harder and the hardness was apparent after we broke 2 plastic spoons in the process. The chocolate was richer, sweeter and denser than the Praline. The hardness of the brownie was due largely to the caramel crunch layer. The layer wasn’t exactly crunchy though, it was more tough and stale, resemblance of something being left in the open for too long. We could taste the distinct sweetness of the caramel. It was an unique brownie, but we do hope that the caramel crunch would indeed be crunchy.
