Pies and Coffee

Nestled within the newly opened Rochester Mall is Pies and Coffee. As the name goes, this cafe specializes in pies and coffee. We arrived at the place in the afternoon and were dismayed that most of the pies were already sold out. On the contrary, this was also testimonial to its tasty creations.

The pies are divided into 2 main categories, Savoury and Sweet, and come in 3 different sizes. The savoury pies, which are served with mashed potatoes and salad, included:

Chicken Shepherd
Chicken Cheddar
Spinach and Feta Cheese
Savoury Ricotta Cheese
Beef Cottage
Brie Cheese and Portobello Mushrooms
Wagyu Beef Cheek
Beef Steak with Foie Gras

The Sweet versions:

Peach
Fruit Tart
Macadamia Nut Cheese Pie
American Apple Pie
Chocolate Almond Cake
Dulce De Leche Custard with Coffee

Chocolate Almond Tart

Chocolate Almond Tart

Chocolate Almond Tart ($8.95) – With its thick slab of chocolate, the Chocolate Almond Tart immediately captured our attention. But sadly, the taste failed to match its appetizing looks. The crust was bland and had no fragrance at all. The chocolate fillings reeked of mediocrity.

Savoury Ricotta K-sized Pie

Savoury Ricotta K-sized Pie ($6.95) – The ricotta pie did fare better than the chocolate tart. The crust was indeed a bit thick and crumbly, but the best part was the generous amount of ricotta cheese. The ricotta cheese was strong in flavours and had a sticky texture which we enjoyed. The accompanying mashed potatoes was mediocre, a standard equivalent to that of KFC’s. Taste and texture wise, the Savoury Ricotta Pie was slightly one-dimensional which made us believe that the rest of the savoury pies would be more appealing.
