Pork Vermicelli

Pork Vermicelli

One of Paradise Inn’s signature dishes – 猪手米粉 Pork Vermicelli. My favourite part of this dish is not the pork meat, it is the vermicelli. The pork trotters are very tender but rather fatty, which I don’t like. The vermicelli had thoroughly absorbed the essence of the pork trotters, sauce and mushrooms. Every mouth of vermicelli was full of flavours. The noodle stands were smooth and chewy. On its own, the vermicelli was pretty good.

Pork Belly with Lotus Bun

Pork Belly with Lotus Bun was mediocre. The pork belly was rather bland. Together with the lotus bus, there weren’t much strong flavours and we had to dip the entire bun into the sauce. The sauce itself was also rather mild; usually it’ll be a little salty, with the aroma and taste of spices and chinese wine. In Paradise Inn’s version, the entire dish was lacking in flavour and aroma.

Supreme Fried Rice

Supreme Fried Rice was average, there were bits of seafood here and there, but it could do with a more generous serving. One thing different was the addition of fish roe. However, somehow, other than the visual aspect, the fish roe did little to accentuate the taste of the fried rice.

Hot Plate Tofu

Hot Plate Tofu was a crowd favourite. The tofu was smooth and silky. Together with the slightly salty sauce and chewy bits of meat, this dish was one of the better ones in the entire meal.

Other dishes we ordered include Minced Pork with Salted Egg and 蒸松鱼头 Steamed ‘Song’ Fish. The 东坡肉 Dong Po Pork was not as tender as the pork trotters, and was rather tough and chewy. Minced Pork with Salted Egg has a rather strong pork taste, which didn’t go too well with some of us. There was some chestnuts added inside, which gave the minced pork added crunchiness. But taste wise, the pork taste was kind of overwhelming.

Steamed ‘Song’ Fish was pretty bad. The fish wasn’t very fresh, it had an obvious fishy taste. Even though the sauce tasted pretty good, the fish meat wasn’t tender enough. In short, the 蒸松鱼头 Steamed ‘Song’ Fish was not worth ordering. The fact that it wasn’t fresh is a huge minus point.

For desserts, we had the 扬枝甘露 Mango Sago and 番薯芋泥 Sweet Taro Paste. We like the bits of pomelo in the 扬枝甘露 Mango Sago. However, the Mango Sago tasted rather artificial, didn’t seem like it was made from fresh mango, but rather, just making use of mango flavoured syrup. Sweet Taro Paste had a few merits; it wasn’t oily and not too sweet. However, it seemed to be lacking in sesame

In general, the desserts at Paradise Inn aren’t too satisfying. But do give the Sesame Paste a try as we feel that compared to most places, Paradise Inn’s version has a very strong sesame taste; it is thick and dense enough.

Overall, we felt that the standard and quality of the food from Paradise Inn weren’t on par with its reputation or our expectations.
